How I work

Not therapy in the clinical sense.
Focused work on what makes you tick.

My approach is grounded in genuine human connection, not labels or quick fixes. I bring more than fifteen years of international experience, and — alongside my clinical work — an active involvement in academic research on emotion. That means I'm comfortable with complexity, culture, and the many different ways people experience the world. In practice, I draw on four proven, evidence-based methods:

Some things only come into focus slowly.

Much of the work is noticing what's already there — the reaction that keeps repeating, the situation that keeps arriving in a different disguise. My job isn't to hand you a label. It's to look with you, carefully, until the shape of it becomes clear.

Humanistic Psychology

The foundation

Rooted in the work of Carl Rogers — empathy, positive regard, and a deep belief in your capacity to grow, forming the base of everything else.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

For rapid progress

We identify and mobilize your existing strengths, so change doesn't have to wait until every root cause is fully unpacked.

Emotionally Focused Therapy

For couples

Helps you and your partner understand and manage your feelings, fostering self-acceptance and more fulfilling relationships.

Cognitive-Behavioral Elements

For lasting change

CBT techniques complement this approach, helping identify and durably shift limiting thought patterns.

Who this is for

You don't need to be in crisis to reach out.

Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed, lonely, or just "off." Maybe you're navigating a quiet turning point, or working through something together with a partner. Wherever you are, you're welcome here — whether you're settled where you grew up or halfway across the world.

Individual sessions

45-minute sessions focused entirely on you — your patterns, reactions, and the situations you can't quite make sense of.

  • Stress, overwhelm & life transitions
  • Recurring emotional patterns
  • Personal growth & self-understanding
  • Adjusting to a new country or culture

Couple sessions

60-minute sessions using an Emotionally Focused Therapy approach — grounded in attachment theory, to help you and your partner step out of the negative cycle you're stuck in, reach the emotions beneath the conflict, and rebuild a secure, lasting bond.

  • Communication & recurring conflict
  • Life transitions as a couple
  • Rebuilding clarity and connection
  • International & cross-cultural relationships

Living abroad? That context matters.

Whether you're an expat adjusting to a new country or someone who has lived abroad for years, I understand what it's like to build a life across cultures — having studied and worked across France, Canada, Germany and China myself.

For those based in Shenzhen, I also offer walk-and-talk sessions in the park.

About me

Dr. Angelika Wolman

I'm a licensed psychologist working with individuals and couples online, in English, French, or German. My path has taken me across France, Canada, Germany, and China — which shaped how I think about emotion, culture, and the many different ways people make sense of their lives.

Alongside my clinical work, I also conduct research into how emotions unfold over time — a curiosity that shows up in session, too, in the way I help clients trace the pattern behind a feeling rather than just naming it.

Credentials

RPPS: 10010044203 — registered with the French national registry for regulated healthcare professionals (Répertoire Partagé des Professionnels de Santé).

My practice is talk-based individual and couples psychology support. I do not offer psychometric testing, ADHD evaluations, memory assessments, or other diagnostic/neuropsychological services.

Common questions

Before you reach out

Do you work with couples remotely?

Yes — couple sessions run for 60 minutes online, using an Emotionally Focused Therapy approach, wherever you and your partner are based.

I'm an expat — does that change anything?

Not the format, but it does shape the work. Having lived and worked across France, Canada, Germany and China myself, I bring direct experience of cross-cultural life to sessions with expats and internationally-minded clients.

Can therapy help me understand why I keep reacting the same way?

Often, yes. Recurring emotional reactions — the anger that comes from nowhere, the withdrawal that happens before you've even decided to withdraw, the anxiety that seems out of proportion to the situation — usually have a shape to them. They're not random. In our sessions, we work to trace that shape: not to label it or explain it away, but to understand where it comes from and what it's still trying to do. Many clients find that simply making a recurring pattern visible is already the beginning of something shifting.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy and how does it work for couples?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is one of the best-researched approaches in couples psychology. It's based on attachment theory — the idea that most couple conflict isn't really about the dishes or the money or who said what, but about underlying fears: am I important to you? Will you be there when I need you? In EFT, we slow down the argument enough to reach what's underneath it — the vulnerability that usually stays hidden behind the criticism or the withdrawal. From that more honest place, couples can start to respond differently to each other, and rebuild the kind of bond where both people feel genuinely secure.

I don't have a diagnosis — can I still work with a psychologist?

Absolutely. Most of the people I work with don't have a diagnosis and aren't in crisis. They're people who feel stuck in a pattern they can't quite name, or who sense that something is off without knowing exactly what. You don't need a referral, a clinical label, or a specific problem to qualify — curiosity about your own internal life is enough to start. Psychology isn't only for acute suffering; it's also for anyone who wants to understand themselves more clearly and live with a little more ease.

How is working with a psychologist different from mindfulness apps or self-help?

Apps and books can be genuinely useful, and I don't dismiss them. But they work on the conscious level — they tell you what to do and trust you to do it. What they can't do is sit with you, notice what you're not saying, follow the hesitation in your voice, or hold the complexity of your actual situation. A psychologist brings clinical training in evidence-based methods — in my case, humanistic psychology, solution-focused brief therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and CBT — and applies them to the specific texture of your life, not a generic user. There's also something about the relationship itself that matters: the experience of being genuinely heard by another person is part of how emotional patterns change. An app can't offer that.
